On the morning of January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger broke apart 73 seconds after launch. The O-rings sealing its booster joints had stiffened in the cold, exactly as some engineers had warned they might. The night before, those warnings lost an argument with a schedule.
The physicist Richard Feynman served on the commission that investigated the disaster. His conclusion has outlived every technical detail of the case, because it is not really about spacecraft. It is about the one negotiation no one wins. You can spin a budget, a headline, or a boardroom. You cannot spin an O-ring at 29 degrees.
This is the engineer's version of the argument for truth, and it is the easiest one to accept because the reckoning is so fast. A bridge built on flattering load calculations does not care who approved them. Software shipped on wishful testing fails on real inputs. Every stack of drawings and inspection reports in the built world around you is, at bottom, a paper trail of people telling each other the truth about steel, load, and failure — and the built world stays up because they mostly do.
The lesson generalizes. Medicine, markets, and governments all run into their own O-rings eventually; the only choice is whether the truth arrives early, as information, or late, as catastrophe. Reality is the one constituency that cannot be lobbied.
