On March 24, 2025, physicians at Xinhua Hospital in Shanghai infused trillions of engineered viral particles into the spinal fluid of a six-year-old girl the researchers would later call Mei, a pseudonym. She had Snijders-Blok-Campeau syndrome, a rare mutation that causes developmental delay, and the viruses carried a molecular tool built to correct that mutation directly inside her brain cells — one of the first attempts anywhere to edit a gene inside a living human brain. Seven days later, Mei was dead of an overwhelming immune reaction. The hospital's own ethics board later concluded that her death was, in its words, definitely related to the treatment.

Eleven months after that, the neuroscientist who led her treatment, Zilong Qiu of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, and his team published the underlying research in Nature: a paper reporting that the same base-editing approach had corrected the mutation in the brains of mice carrying the human variant, and that the delivery system reached neurons throughout the brains of monkeys. The paper said nothing about a six-year-old. It said nothing about a death. For five more months, the only people who knew that a person had already received this treatment, and had died of it, were her family, her hospital, and the scientists who had treated her.

The public did not learn what happened because anyone involved chose to disclose it. It learned in late July 2026, when a joint investigation by Science magazine and Retraction Watch published documents and interviews that established what the Nature paper never had. Only then did Shanghai Jiao Tong University's medical school announce what it called a comprehensive investigation. Only then did Nature attach an editor's note acknowledging that concerns had been raised about the paper, including about its data, and that the journal would take editorial action as appropriate.

The case was not a fluke. Days after the story broke, a separate Shanghai company, HuidaGene Therapeutics, confirmed — after months of questions from the news outlet STAT — that a boy had died in one of its own gene-editing trials the previous August, and that it had said nothing about it for nearly a year. Two children, two companies, one instinct: a treatment that kills the person it was meant to help is easiest to survive, reputationally, by never mentioning that it happened. That option only exists because the truth of a trial belongs, in its first hours, entirely to the people running it. Nobody else can supply what they withhold.

A scientific paper is not only a claim about what worked. By everything it leaves out, it is also a claim about what didn't happen: no complications, no deaths, nothing withheld. Omit the one fatal case from a paper about a treatment's safety and the paper does not become incomplete — it becomes the opposite of true, because its silence tells every reader precisely the reverse of what occurred. The bioethicist Hank Greely put the standard as plainly as it can be put: death should always be mentioned in a first-in-human trial. Not because the mention flatters anyone, but because the next scientist, and the next family, will decide whether to try this again based on what the paper says happened last time. A paper that omits the case that ended in death is not a shorter version of the truth. It is a different document, wearing the true one's name.
