On May 17, 2026, a UK molecular biologist named Sholto David was paging through antibody catalogs online when a single image stopped him. Thermo Fisher Scientific had posted a Western blot as validation data for an Invitrogen antibody built to detect the protein p53 — proof, the catalog page implied, that the antibody found what it claimed to find. Several of the bands in the image, David noticed, were identical to each other, just flipped and rotated. He posted it to Bluesky. Within days, other scientists were pulling up antibody catalogs of their own, looking for the same thing.
A validation image is the smallest, least glamorous document in modern biology, and one of the most load-bearing. Antibodies are the lab's workhorse reagents: tag the right protein with the right one and a Western blot shows a single dark band exactly where that protein runs. Buy the wrong antibody and a band still appears — a lie shaped exactly like your hypothesis. A 2023 study testing 614 commercial antibodies against cells engineered to lack their target found more than half failed in at least one application they were sold for, against a standing estimate of roughly a billion dollars a year wasted on antibodies that don't work. No lab has time to re-verify every antibody it buys. The validation image is the promise that somebody already did.
That promise turned out to be worth almost nothing. As Reese Richardson, a researcher at Northwestern University, joined the search, the count climbed: more than 100 fabricated images at Thermo Fisher by May 28, more than 450 there plus a first hit at Abcam by June 3. By August 25, Richardson's expanded public database held more than 18,000 questionable images across fifteen vendors — bands copied and repositioned, backgrounds cropped in from unrelated blots, regions painted over to erase whatever didn't fit. Thousands of them shared one of seven documented background templates: the same manufactured backdrop, standing in as proof for antibody after unrelated antibody. James Trimmer, a UC Davis neuroscientist who has spent his career developing antibodies, called it the worst case of scientific fraud to hit the antibody world.
Thermo Fisher's response denied the premise. Some images may have been optimized for presentation and clarity, the company said; it fully stands by the data and the underlying science. That is not a small disagreement. If a picture can be optimized for presentation until identical bands turn up in unrelated products, the picture was never functioning as evidence. It was functioning as packaging, wearing evidence's clothes.
Science's self-correcting reputation is usually tested at the top of the pyramid — the headline study, the famous name, the retraction that makes the news. This scandal sits at the bottom, in a layer nobody thought to check because checking it was supposed to be somebody else's job. Every layer of research trusts the layer beneath it to have already verified — which means a fraud at the foundation never announces itself. It just sits under an unknown number of experiments, quietly untrue in a way no reader could see.
A validation image was supposed to be the boring part — the piece of the record too small to be worth lying about. That assumption is exactly why nobody checked it for years. The lesson outlasts biology. Any system of trust is only as strong as its most tedious, least-inspected layer.
